Visiting the Music of Carousel: Carousel Waltz

This instrumental piece opens the musical and is one of the most iconic compositions in Carousel. It sets the tone for the entire musical by evoking the excitement and motion of a carousel, while also hinting at the darker, more turbulent emotions that will play out in the story. The swirling, circular melody mirrors the carousel ride and introduces the audience to the carnival setting in a vibrant, yet somewhat haunting, way.

Unlike most overtures of the time, which were medleys of the musical’s main songs, "The Carousel Waltz" is a standalone orchestral piece. It serves as a thematic and emotional prologue to the show, rather than a summary of the music to come. Its lush, symphonic style was unusual for a Broadway musical in the 1940s, giving Carousel an almost operatic quality.
